Caring for parents

I was talking to a friend this week and we discussing parents and the fact that, as far as we know, no one has written a book about how to deal with looking after ageing parents and what is on offer for them.
My Dad passed away last year but before that we had to sort out carers for him and dealing with Social services is an experience all of its own! For the last 6 months of his life (we didn't know it would only be 6 months at the time) he went into a care home as he was getting violent with his dementia and my Mum couldn't cope anymore. His dementia was at the stage that sometimes he would know you and sometimes he didn't but one of the things that really upset him was that he was separated from his wife (my Mum) and he would get so upset at not being with her. But then the next time you went he would be sat next to one of the ladies in the home and he would telling you that she was a special friend!! It was really difficult to deal with and for me very upsetting until I got used to it.
Talking to friends who have ageing parents is really helpful as we can bounce ideas off each other and get information on how to do things or where to get things but it would be really helpful to have a booklet about what they can get and where to go and what options there are. Perhaps I should have a think about that one.

What is the next step

3 March 2014 - This week our youngest has started her first proper job after leaving university so that means that both our babies have gone out into the big wide world. What does this mean for us now I wonder ? Time for us, new hobby perhaps we will have to give it some thought.
